I was born in country Victoria, Australia in the early 1970s, but grew up in Melbourne. My brother & sister arrived 10 and 14 years later. Since my parents loved the country and had only moved to Melbourne reluctantly, we spent many weekends driving back there. The net result was that apart from school, I didn't get to interact with other kids much during my formative years. Books became my companions instead, and we travelled far together.
After finishing high school, I completed a Bachelor of Economics & Commerce at the University of Melbourne. Graduating in 1993, I set off around the world and didn't return to Australia until 2 years later. Eventually I settled in Sydney, where I remain to this day with my wife and daughter.
I'd always harboured dreams of writing a novel, but didn't start writing fiction consistently until 1998. In May 2001, I was fortunate enough to be awarded a mentorship by the NSW Writers’ Centre to develop a very early version of my novel Fivefold. In the same year I started having modest short stories published and my path was set. Since then, I've had 20 short stories published in various Australian journals, magazines and webzines.
In January 2005, I attended Clarion South, the Australian version of the famous US residential short story workshop. This amazing, gruelling course accelerated my development as a writer and enabled me to polish Fivefold to a professional standard. In the latter part of 2006, I secured a literary agent and the manuscript was sold to Random House Australia in January 2007.
Finally, because I'm always interested in who other writers read, here is a short list of authors I admire.
