Time seems to have become slippery of late. Has it really been six weeks since my last update? I suppose it must, as a fair bit has happened since last year.
The Aurealis Awards have come & gone. As always, it was a fantastic night and hats off to the management committee for running such a professional gig. Simon Brown’s excellent story, “The Empire”, won the award for best science fiction story. It was first published in “Dreaming Again” and if you haven’t checked out that anthology yet, I would highly recommend it.

The judges were kind enough to say this about my story in their report: “A very emotive and evocative story about a just-around-the-corner future. Burrage makes good use of SF’s ability to confront the ills of our present, with a powerful critique of our economic, political and social systems. Through the tale of a slightly odd but genuine friendship between two very different men, the values of human dignity and choice are shown to be threatened by a system that is not so very different from ours.” |
Well, I’ll take evocative every day of the week.
A couple more pieces of news have brightened my year so far. FIVEFOLD was included in the recommended reading list over at HorrorScope and the industrious Stuart Mayne, editor of Aurealis Magazine, was kind enough to let me know one of my short stories will be included in Issue 43. However, the main game continues to be novel 2. The manuscript is almost within touching distance of 150,000 words and it has a playmate in the form of a synopsis.
Where will it end, I ask you?
