According to the judges of the
Aurealis Awards, in 2008 the
following novels were published in Australia:
Given that novels can be nominated in more than one category –
for example, FIVEFOLD was nominated in both adult Fantasy and
Horror – that would suggest somewhere between 50 and 70
speculative fiction novels were published by Australian writers.
That’s a remarkable number given the size of our country and the
potential readership. It’s also a testament to the vitality and
variety of the local writing and publishing community.
So when the Ditmar Award nominations were released, you can
imagine my astonishment, and delight, to find that FIVEFOLD had
been shortlisted for the “Best Novel” category. Not best Fantasy
or Horror, but best novel across all categories.
Nominations for the Ditmar Awards can come
from anyone who is active in local fandom, but only members of
the national convention can vote on the shortlists. Full rules
here, if
you’re interested.
So thank you to everyone who nominated FIVEFOLD and congratulations to the other finalists. The complete shortlists are available on the Conjecture website and results from the final ballot should be publicised around the 8th of June.
